Wing Chun is one of the most secretive Kung Fu styles. It has traditionally been taught only to family and very close friends, but the interest in Wing Chun has grown over the years because no matter what age, sex or fitness level, anyone can practise it. Even so there are still very few instructors in this country today.
Wing Chun has its origins in the Shaolin Temple of Northern China. The Shaolin monks developed a formidable open hand and weapon fighting system called Shaolin Kung Fu. The only nun at the Shaolin temple, Ng Mui, inspired by watching a fight between a crane and a snake, incorporated the direct striking ot the snake and simultaneous block and strike of the crane's beak into a new fighting style. Ng Mui used the concepts of directness, simplicity and consevation of strength she had wtnessed in the contest. The new style utilised avoidance of force rather than muscle power.
The new fighting system was passed on to her adopted disciple, a girl by the name of Yim Wing Chun after whom Ng Mui named the new system. Wing Chun was passed down through the generations to the last Great Grand Master Ip Man (who was Bruce Lee's teacher). Then to his sons Ip Chun and Ip Ching, who both taught Grand Master Samuel Kwok, the instructor of Sifu Derek O'Hanlon
More recently Wing Chun Kung Fu has been made famous by stars such as Bruce Lee, Robert Downey Jr, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Keanu Reeves. It has featured in many films including Sherlock Holmes, Casino Royale, Crouching Tiger and the Matrix and more recently in the Ip Man movies 1 and 2 which tell the story of Ip Man who was Bruce Lee's teacher. Wing Chun is also practised by many other film stars, sports stars and celebrities.
